Gracias España!
Early this year I was invited to attend this convention i’ve never heard about. But, talking to my friend CB Cebulski in Argentina he said: I went there and its great. Different than anything you have ever experienced. And prepare to eat a lot.
So, september has arrived, and there was we (me and Deb, my grilfriend) flying to Spain full of expectations. When we got there, Jorge Argiz (the main organizer of the event), Germán and Roberto were there to take us to the hotel. Arriving on the town, we saw a small, cute and almost medieval village. That was the historic center of Avilés. No cars allowed. Never saw anything like that. I’ve liked since the begining.
Deb and I walked arround the town, having a great time, and by the evening we’ve met the other guests: Tony Harris (fenomenal Starman and Ex-Machina artist) and his huge charisma, the talented Brandon Peterson, Mark Buckinghan (and his charming wife Irma), Melinda Gebbie (Lost Girls), John McCrea, Hitman artist (one of my favorite comics ever), the Scalped team Jason Aaron (and his lovely wife Kelly) and the master R.M. Guera. I’ve the honor to met, briefely Juanjo Guarnido, the artist of Blacksad whom I’m huge fan. So, for the caliber of the guests, you can see how special is this place. I’d specially would like to thank all the organizers Jorge, his girlfriend Rosio (who owns a really cool comic shop in the town), Diego, an amazing translator (seriously. The guy must speas 50 languages…), the silent Gérman and Roberto for all the amazing dinners (and extra pounds), and kind. Also, would like to thank all the fans, who went there to meet all their favorite creators, with respect and generosity (they are always paying coffees and beers). After that, I understood why this is a such a special event.
Leaving Aviés, we spent a few days in Barcelona, and there we had the opportunity to meet the living legend Jordi Bernet. He is right now illustrating 3-part arc of my book, American Vampire. We had a great time drinking coffee and talking about comics (and gossips). Awesome artist, awesome guy.
In my first time in Europe, I couldn’t have been in a better place to start.
